Sony Science Program that Combines Innovation and Green Message


 

Selangor, 5th Oct – Sony Group of Companies in Malaysia today hosted its inaugural Sony Science Program – “Making Headphones from Recycled Materials” Workshop for 20 local primary schools from Wilayah Persekutuan, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The 1-day Program benefited a total of 100 students who joined their teachers for the headphone making session and also enjoyed a factory tour to the Sony TV manufacturing site at Sony EMCS (Malaysia) in Bangi where the Program was also held. More than 90 Sony management and staff participated as volunteers in this Program.

“We aim to cultivate scientific minds in our young Malaysian children. In the next 5 years, Sony through its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in Malaysia will organize science & technology workshops targeting students in local schools. The Sony Science Program aims to promote science knowledge and creativity amongst the young generation,” said Hiroyasu Sugiyama, Managing Director of Sony Malaysia and representative to Sony Group of Companies in Malaysia at his opening speech this morning.

Sony has provided support for science education through a variety of initiatives taken by Sony Group of Companies both in Japan and around the world, as envisioned by one of Sony’s founders, Masaru Ibuka. The Sony Science Program started in 2009, with a series of workshops for children planned and conducted by Sony engineers and volunteers that aim to teach children about the principles of science through first-hand experience, to encourage curiosity and to inspire imagination. Since its inception, the Sony Science Program has provided opportunities for children around the world to experience science & technology firsthand. The Sony Science Program is also being held in Japan, Singapore, Thailand and China. 

Locally and globally, Sony Group recognizes that its businesses have direct and indirect impact on the societies in which it operates. It is important for Sony to grow together with the community and give back to the communities in which the company operates. Speaking at the certificate presentation ceremony, Senior Principal Assistant Director, Haji Mohd.Anuar b. Haji Abd. Hamid from Co-curriculum and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia, commended on Sony Science Program. “The Sony Science Program is a unique Program where students have the opportunity to experience science firsthand while having fun. The headphones workshop allows students to build their own headphones and customize it creatively using recycled materials, hence encouraging creativity at young age. The Program also enhances and adds value to the conventional teaching in schools, serving as an additional support in teaching and learning in class”. He added, “We hope organizations and companies like Sony will continue to organize educational, fun and quality Programs that explore the individual potentials of our future generation in Malaysia and prepare them for the challenges they will face in society”.

The Sony Science Program is a 1-day event with activities that include headphone workshop, TV plant tour and 3D experience. Breakfast and lunch are provided and each participant is given a certificate for successfully completing the program.
